Contrary to what you may have read, I don't hate Valentine's Day. I actually love it, single or not. When I was a kid my mom and I use to sit at our kitchen table for weeks before Valentine's day, surrounded by glitter, heart shaped stickers, stacks of pink paper and every red, pink and purple crayon I owned, making cards. I would wake up on Valentine's day with a little present from my mom, along with a beautiful Valentine's Day card she had made. Can't say I've grown out of pink or hearts, so February 14th remains top on my list. So since it's Valentine's Day eve, we are making heart shaped chocolate chip cookies and watching the bachelor, and tomorrow for the big day we're going for cocktails and then watching 'The Vow'.

I have always wanted a tattoo, and for the last few years have been daydreaming about adding half sleeve to my left arm. A pretty big deal, I know! I've seen a few things here and there that I've liked, but I've never found anything that I could imagine having on my body for the rest of my life.... until now! I think this is the most beautiful tattoo I've ever seen, and.... I think I'll sleep on it for a few more years.

While browsing around, I came across A is for Ambersand, who has dedicated the month of February to 'Self-love' month, "learning to fight insecurity, love yourself, and start living in the moment. February is Eating disorder awareness month, and Amber shares a bit of her own battle with anorexia to shed some light on how debilitating and life threatening this disease is. When a brave soul takes a stand and brings awareness to a topic we still don't talk enough about, eating disorders and struggles with negative body images, it's incredible how many women come out of the wood work and start sharing their own personal struggles. I battled with an eating disorder in my 20's that consumed my life for too many years, and my family and I experienced how heartbreaking and deadly these diseases can be when a close family member was hospitalized for many months also battling anorexia. How is the idea to start turning the hate we have towards our bodies into love that we have for ourselves still something of a revolution?

Oh how I love Saturday mornings. Sleeping in is one of those things I look forward to starting Monday mornings, then being lazy for a few hours with as much coffee as my little heart desires, still comfy in my pyjamas, browsing around all of the places I love to go on the internet. Ah, such a nice start to the weekend. So after my coffee pot is empty and I start to feel guilty for not getting dressed yet, I'll be spending the rest of the weekend....

A good friend and I were talking about shoes today. She was telling me about one 'fairy-tale' like night, when her ex-boyfriend secretly special ordered a pair of Louboutin's for her and brought them home.... just out of the blue. The modern version of the glass slipper?! (note 'ex' so I guess not...) I only wish I had an extra $800 for a pair of these beauties.

I was reading the other day that many years ago Christian himself was bored and feeling un-inspired. He took a bottle of red nail polish his assistant was using to paint her nails and covering the soles of one of his creations, voila! shoe history was made.

One of my non-New Years resolutions (because I don't make those anymore), is to start cooking again. I actually love to cook, but for some reason in the transition from Toronto to Edmonton, I lost my zest to be in the kitchen. And I'm a little rusty to be honest. The last few weeks of the New Year have been full of a whole bunch of not so great attempts. Tonight I followed a recipe from one of my favourite magazines, 'Real Simple' for Maple-glazed salmon with roasted Brussels sprouts, and..... delicious! If you've never roasted Brussels sprouts before, I'd suggest you try!

Well, Hello!

It's coming on a year since I last posted on this here blog. I think I started to feel like it was becoming work. But when it's all said and done, I want to continue to have a little place to put thoughts, and inspirations, and loves, so I'm going to give it another try. I don't believe there is anyone out there hanging onto my every word, so that's good.

I love new years. I love having a fresh new start to the year, to make new plans, and new goals, and move/grow. I've decided this year I am going to do or learn something new every month. I decided this a week ago, so being that the month is almost over, I didn't have a lot of time to dive into something big. So I thought I'd to go with inspiration. The last few months of 2010 were intense, so say the least. I moved across the country, started a new job, and spend a few months just adjusting, and starting all over again. I realized that I have forgotten to add a little joy and excitement in there, and when I really looked at my new day to day, there was very little that gave me a sense of wonder or inspiration. So. I believe this is a good place to start.

Happy Sunday! I use to be a craft-a-holic. I was the most happy working away on some crafty project, but lately I haven't had much motivation to do anything creative. I bought these great magnet sheets awhile ago at the dollar store. I used most of them for personalized magnets that were perfect stocking stuffers. I love this. The Uniform Project was developed by this saint who has vowed to wear the same dress 365 ways ( she has seven versions of the same dress.... one for everyday if your wondering). The project is to investigate the idea of uniform, sustainable ideas about wardrobes, and raise money for education expenses for children living in the slums of India. Happy Sunday to you! I've had a lazy morning, which has included sleeping late, breakfast and coffee with my sister, and roaming around the internet in my pajamas, singing at the top of my lungs to Serena Ryder. Last weekend I got out the scissors and some pretty paper with the intent of decking my apartment with multiple strings of harts. Well after cutting a handful, I quickly convinced myself that multiple strings was overdoing it, and opted for a string of hearts. A short string. Here it is, and yah, I think that's enough. I am in the midst of making a tone of Valentine's Day cards for an upcoming artist open house, and am getting a little hearted out.

You were reading Catch-22 on the subway this morning. I have never seen such a beautiful profile. I wanted to say hi, but then you’d turn towards me and I wouldn’t be able to look at your profile anymore. You were so into your book, I don’t think you noticed me falling in love with you. But I thought I’d ask, just in case.

Isn't this the sweetest? I always thought the idea of 'Missed Connections' in the paper where so romantic. I love what a lovely world we live in, where we all go around crushing on complete strangers, finding quirky little things to be intrigued by. Also, what a bunch of chicken shits we all are....

I feel like love is in the air today. Then I realized it is exactly one month until Valentines day. My mom always made Valentine's Day one to be excited about. We would sit together for weeks before, making elaborate Valentine's Day cards for our friends and family, our kitchen table taken over with piles of heart stickers, glitter, white doilies, and colored paper. Valentine's Day has always been less of a romantic day, and more of a day to just say 'I Love You' to those that you do. This year I decided to continue the tradition, and start making my own ( and SENDING them, in the mail). I'm also adding Valentine's Day and 'Missed Connections' to my list of 'Loves'.

Happy New Year! My first post in 2010, and a few weeks in the new year ( new decade) I'm feeling the lack in luster that comes with every January.... it's cold, there is little money in the account after Christmas, and there are all those New Year's resolutions to start following through on. One of them being to update this blog more than once every few months ( along with becoming financially savvy, getting all the cards, letters, gifts I make for friends and family actually in the mail, and deciding what career I want to peruse from here on in). A few months ago my mom handed over a few old tins full of odds and ends of my (late) grandmother's. They were stuffed with... stuff. And I put them up on the shelf and let the dust settle for a bit. Well in the whirlwind of a spring cleaning I did this weekend, I decided it was time to get to it, and discover what was waiting for me....... holly molly!! My sad, sad pictures from my broken camera unfortunately don't show much, but finds included a handful of old broaches, antique pins, a few coins from the 1982 Olympics, someone's baby teeth ( weird), a old curling iron and tones and tones of costume jewelry. The little treasures brought back so many memories of my grandmother, who loved to get dressed up and head off to her square dancing parties.

Peter and the Wolf on a rainy Canadian day in the spring

Good morning.

I woke up with plans to spend the little bit of free time I have this weekend outside in the sun with a friend. But it's pouring out, and for the first rainy day of spring, all I want to do is stay in bed with a steaming paper cup of coffee ( I ran across the street to Tim Hortons, I can't make coffee to save my life). And this is where I'll stay. For the next hour, until I HAVE to leave the house.

So. On the Fashion front, hummmm, well, I have realized since starting this blog I know hardly anything about Fashion, and although I have always been a lover of clothes, I've been feeling very un-inspired these last few weeks. Toronto Fashion Week was last week, and I've been disappointed in what I've seen so far. I've been looking through my very long list of Fashion Blogs religiously, as always, and feel not so aww struck either. The biggest excitement I've felt over what someone has decided to put on their bodies is the sailor necklace Blair was waring in last weeks Gossip girl, and a great plaid shirt William Hurt was waring in 'The Big Chill', which I watched last night. And my own wardrobe, well I won't even begin.

Woes me. Blame it on the rain I guess.

BUT. I did discover Canadian designer, Philip Sparks which brings a ray of hope on a rainy day. His F/W 2009 collection was inspired by the Characters out of Peter and the Wolf, and it feels oh so... Canadian. It's not that I think we should all be running around dressed like fur traders, but I do feel that we are missing a sense of identity in what us up north decided to wear. Anyway, enough of the blabber.

While taking my usually brows through Apartment Therapy at work today, I came across an amazing house tour. I usually pass right through the boring stuff, like how long the family has lived in their house, what their biggest accomplishment is.... blah blah blah. Unless I'm liking what I'm seeing enough to want to know these people. And Oh did I. The house is owned by a fashion designer who lives in Berkeley CA. I took a look at her site, and OH WOW!-!!!. I LOVE Lover

A few weeks ago browsing around and stopping by Sally Jane Vintage, I discovered Lover the Label. ( yep, I've been living under a huge rock). I haven't been able to get the spring collection out of my head. And that hat, well that hat stole my heart. These pictures are actually from their fall collection, that I found on The Vine. There is something funny going on with there website, and I haven't been able to access it since falling in LOVE. There will be more to come. Right now, all I can think of is the weather turning into blissful summer warmth, and finding myself one of those hats, that I too will ware with my entire wardrobe. Oh there will be more to come.

The Burberry fall 2009 collection almost makes me want to skip summer altogether and go straight to fall. To me, this is the perfect combination of masculine and feminine. I love all the little bits of pretty underneath strong solid jackets. Throw a scarf on anything and I'm usually happy, but add some grey and I'm smitten.

My idea of great style is getting that personality of yours right out there, front and center. My sister has mastered the art of doing this. She's become a bit of a fashion icon in the city, being photographed for Eye Weekly, and Now Toronto. I'm always so proud. These pictures are from one sunny day in the Fall, taken in Kensington Market, where we usually meet for coffee.
